A Harmonious Madness: There are approximately 40 people in my residence's lounge watching the Leader's Debate right now

milliejames:

imagineation:

People are sitting on couch arms, on the ground, on the fridge, and on each other. People are standing outside and listening through the door.

People are groaning, applauding, laughing, and thinking.

We can barely ever coerce 10 into watching a movie.

And they definitely never applaud.

This…

I never used to think about politics.  I’d boo the Conservatives because that was what my parents did.  But now I’m so happy that I’m thinking for myself.  Okay, so I am influenced by others, but who isn’t?  And although I am not nearly informed enough on this election, it feels good to know I’m not clueless, and to actually be interested in the future of Canada.

Although, I admit it, I am scared if Harper is reelected, the thing that terrifies me the most is apathy.  That anyone (especially youth) won’t vote because they just don’t care.  I know it’s hard to sometimes, especially when you feel sheltered, but it’s so important to care about your country and the people in it.  Even if you don’t feel much effect from the government, it effects everyone and it’s a duty that everyone should do.

I am proud to find the amount of people watching the debate as I did tonight in our 3rd Floor Lounge.  To find that not all young voters are apathetic.

Please, vote!

If you want to vote in Waterloo before you leave you can. The election here last time was VERY close (17 votes) so every vote could matter. Here’s some information.

Where: Elections Canada Returning Office, 230 Regina Street
When: Everyday Mon-Fri 9am-9pm, Sat 9am-6pm, Sun 12pm-4pm, until April 26 6pm
How: You will be voting by “special ballot”, which means you will need to spend 3-4 minutes filling in a form, and you will need to write in the candidate’s name to vote.

Identification: You will need to provide identification with your Waterloo address.
You can establish proof of identity and address in one of two ways:

  1. Provide one original piece of identification with your photo, name and Waterloo address. It must be issued by a government agency. (Example: driver’s license)
  2. OR
  3. Provide two original pieces of authorized identification.
One piece must have your name (Examples: health card, debit card, passport).
One piece must have your name and Waterloo address (Examples: lease, utility bill, bank/credit card statement, school correspondence).
